This was pretty okay. Which is disappointing considering David Fincher directed it. The problem (with having not seen the swedish films/read the books) I think, lies with the source material. It just isn’t very good. There are a couple of cool moments, but the last 30 minutes of the film were a mess. The conclusion to the mystery did not feel like a solid pay-off, and then the film goes on for what seems like an extra 20 minutes that added nothing to the story. Looking back, there were only two scenes that were great. The techniques used to visualize and dramatize research was great, similar to what Fincher did with programming in The Social Network, but that doesn’t propel this movie to anything besides okay.
The performances were great, the shots were meticulous, the score was modern and fitting, but I can’t help but feel like this is my least favorite of Fincher’s works. Just kidding, looking back at his cinematography this was obviously better than Aliens 3, but this film is probably on par with Panic Room (if not slightly better).
